The Grove Primary School

Year 4

Maple and Beech

What an incredible way to begin the year. Firstly, the whole Year 4 team would like to celebrate the brilliant work and commitment to learning which every child has displayed. From the very first day, it is clear how much we are loving the term and subsequently Year 4. Mrs Fairley has made a brilliant impression and has settled in so much it is like she has always been here.

Our topic this term has been ‘It’s a Mystery’ and we have woven this theme throughout much of our learning.

Writing

In Writing, the children have been building on their skills from Year 3. They all enjoyed learning about the legend of the Loch Ness Monster, writing their own mystery story with fabulous fronted adverbials and creative conjunctions. In recent weeks, the children have honed their journalistic talents as news reporters, investigating mysterious goings on at The Grove!

Maths

This term we have worked hard across our topics of place value and addition and subtraction while also practicing our timetables every day. In place value, we have looked a range of representations such as place value grids and place value counters. We are all able to multiply and divide by 10, 100 and even 1000. Across the unit, the children have solved problems and applied their knowledge to a range of questions which have tested their knowledge. We have also looked at strengthening their knowledge of addition and subtraction. The children have become confident in using column addition and are able to exchange (carry) with ease. It has been a real pleasure to see the children develop in their times tables and we have managed to complete our 2s, 5s and 10s already this year.

Art

We have been studying the enigmatic Banksy in art this term. From creating effective stencils, to using cardboard and pastels to make a brick wall, the children have fully engaged in the design process and the end results are fantastic.

Reading

This term’s book has had us captivated with the exciting story of Sherlock Holmes’ helpers, the Baker Street Boys in ‘The Case of the Disappearing Detective’. The mystery is set in Victorian London and has led to lots of great conversations around steam trains and deer-stalker hats!

Science

In Science we have been investigating the three States of Matter: Solid, Liquid and Gas. We have carried out many practical experiments including exploring the freezing points of different liquids and recreating the water- cycle.

P.E

We have had an amazing time in P.E this term where all the children have made great choices and been able to take part in a range of sessions. We have learned to play tennis and control the racket and ball on the playground. We have even managed to have a rally between some of our keenest tennis players. In our inside sessions, we have been looking at moving to music and the topic of WW2. We have discussed the topic and created a range of movements which represent the lives of those we have learned about in the topic.

Geography

Inspired by our Writing topic, we have been looking in detail at Loch Ness. Through the use of maps and photos we have been exploring the physical and human features of the area and comparing it to Edinburgh and Trowbridge. We also looked at the similarities and differences between Trowbridge and Banff in Canada. In our final lessons of the term, we used four-figure grid references to make our own maps with a key.

Computing

This topic has been networks. We have spent time discussing what a network is and how they can link digital devices. A highlight of the topic was where we made a human network and children role played as network switches, routers and computers.

PSHE

We have been setting out our class boundaries and rules so that we can have some kind, harmonious classrooms. The remainder of the term has been working on our feelings and how we can express our feelings to one another. We have read stories, take part in drama and had whole class discussions about the topic of feelings.

French

Bonjour! We have been recapping our knowledge of salutations or greetings. It is a pleasure for our young people to have shared in modern foreign languages day where we shared croissants for break and many of the year group shared their own second languages.
